I can't figure out on how to use the flash w/o washing out the whole shot...so I end up not using the flash and the pic is dull. I'm sure there is an answer that I am clueless about...want to clue me in?

This is one of our 1980s-looking light fixtures in our home. Not sure why the original owners used these, given that the house was built in the mid 1990s…strange choice. Anyway, we have lived with them for many years now. Though I look and them and know they are decidedly out-dated, they don’t bug us enough to go through the hassle of changing them.

It's amazing that by day 4 of this little project, my eyes search for (and often find!) photo ops everywhere. I try to take so many pics, but 99.9% of the time, I my vision for the pic just doesn't manifest itself...perhaps time and practice will help. I actually think this pic is kind of cool - and it is certainly not something I would have tried if I weren't doing 365.

My Project 365

Lest I digress into turning this into a project 365 of my beautiful daughter and thereby defeat the whole purpose of the project, I feel the need to set some goals and parameters for myself. Here we go…

Goals for My Project 365
  1. Do something creative (even if it is just taking one picture) everyday
  2. Do something everyday that has NOTHING whatsoever to do with my career, research, field of study, college, or students
  3. Do something everyday that has NOTHING whatsoever (at least directly) to do with my roles as mommy, wife, or homeowner/homemaker
  4. Stretch myself, by doing something I have absolutely zilch training in or knowledge of (i.e. photography)
  5. Open myself to new experiences and new people by putting my pics on this blog as well as a project 365 group on flickr
  6. View my city (which I LOVE), my environment, and the settings of my day-to-day grind with new, fresh eyes – or in ways I hadn’t in the past
  7. Explore my visual sense – everything I do is language based (written and spoken) – and I want to experience life visually for a change
  8. Learn something! About myself, photography, the world, whatever…this has always been the best way for me to INVIGORATE my psyche and my senses.
Project Parameters
  1. Take a picture EVERYDAY…I think this is a no-brainer, but if I don’t say it, I can see myself stockpiling photos for days when I am “too busy”
  2. While a picture that includes my daughter is ok occasionally, she should not be the focus of the blog in any way – remember goal # 3!
  3. At least one picture a week must be in color – I have a tendency to take a large number of black and whites…probably because I think they make cruddy shots look better!
  4. Pictures do not have to be perfect, great, or even good – this is part of a learning process and having an expectation of the quality of pictures will only stymie my process
  5. Have fun, but keeping taking pictures even if it stops being fun…the goal is to stretch
I think that’s it for now. The goals address my need for focus, and the parameters address the possible excuses/fallbacks/roadblocks I could envision at this point.

I can do this!!!!!
